Review of Roll for Initiative, a middle grade book about friendship, self-confidence, and D&D!

Roll for Initiative by Jaime Formato is a middle grade book all about making friends and finding oneself with some help from D&D!  It follows the story of Riley as she rolls with life’s changes when her big brother (and D&D DM) moves away for college.  She grows, makes friends, and starts running her own campaign… and, especially when her brother comes back home and tries to run things his way, learns that she maybe likes taking the initiative.

Tips and tricks for pacing tabletop RPGs for kids

I’ve gotten a few questions about how pacing tabletop RPGs for kids is different than pacing a tabletop RPG for adults, and the answer is actually a bit complicated since it depends significantly on your kid (there’s a big difference between pacing a game for a 4 year old, a 9 year old, or a 15 year old).  Despite this range and variation though, there are common techniques that can apply to any age range AND there’s some easy ways to reframe them so they can more easily apply to kids!

Tabletop RPG (including D&D) gift ideas that aren’t just stuff

There are many momentous occasions that we want to celebrate with our tabletop RPG groups, from player birthdays and real-life holidays to in-game victories and campaign finales! One way to celebrate is to get someone a gift! However, with multiple people at the table, lots of events, lots of kids who maybe don’t have their own money, and other factors, gift-giving can also be stressful for some.
