Featured Project: A Most Brilliant Spark, Examining Death Through a Celebration of Life
*Regarding content, TTRPGkids covers all-ages and youth-focused tabletop RPGs, which includes those for teens and young adults, not just little kids. Mental health is an important part of helping youth develop, and this game was made with the inention of helping players, particularly teens and young adults, with this, therefore, I believe the article fits for the site.

Fade-to-Black to Begin the Story…
“Player Character death strikes a final curtain for their storyteller. The tales that unfold after their passing are merely echoes of their past influence. We often commemorate the stories that lead up to a PC’s demise, but there is another story that lies dormant, resting untold in the flash between life and death.”

A Most Brilliant Spark is a collaborative, soul-searching TTRPG for 1-5 players who dare to ask, “can death offer a clarity that could not be found in life?” Choose a Player Character who died in-game and explore their hidden desires by remixing core memories into a kaleidoscope of fantasy, psychedelia, and retrospection. Players will flip random suits from a deck of playing cards to guide a dream-narrative in unpredictable ways and systematically zero-in on the PC’s unconscious desires that ultimately reveal during their death transition. When the deck runs out, the dream ends, and so will, finally, the Player Character.
Weave Meaning Through Chaos
A Most Brilliant Spark is a great fit for teens as it provides a creative and safe outlet for players to explore abstract concepts of death through the celebration of their own Player Characters’ lives. Each suit within a deck of playing cards represents a category of core memories from the PC’s past life: Events, Places, Personas, and Traits. Players will flip a card on their turn and either build a dream narrative from existing memory fragments within that card suit or create a new fragment. The turns embrace the freeflow surrealness of a dream-like state.
How does all of this chaos tie together? Through a single question, answered by the Player Character at the start of the game, “What was the traveler seeking throughout their life?”
Each new story beat is an exploration of this question and answer. The question is repeated several times throughout the game and the answer may change depending on the events of the dream. This “zeroing-in” on a PC’s desire is the very soul of the game and allows players to embrace emotional and cathartic story beats that translate both in-game and real life.

Help us Fund This Great Project
A Most Brilliant Spark is funding on BackerKit from November 10 – December 8, 2026. If you’re going to PAX Unplugged, stop by our Alewood Games booth (#4335). We will be giving away free playing cards with custom game-art to anyone who pledges to the campaign.
Contributing to Better Mental Health
We plan to manufacture a duplicate zine for every physical pledge we fulfill on BackerKit and donate it to a mental health clinician or organization who uses applied gaming in their practice. We are also working with certified therapists to create expressive and trauma therapy protocols utilizing the game mechanics and themes which will be offered as a free resource, post-crowdfunding.
