Greeting Games: art kick off and next steps

Last Greeting Games update, my goal was to do layout and playtesting for the four unlocked cards and send final art prompts to the artists, and… I got it in!

Here’s a quick peek at my prototype version (so the artist hasn’t added their part in yet… these are just my doodles) for the Library Cat game!

Oh no! One of the library’s magical tomes is missing and spilling chaos everywhere!
Play as Lucky the Library Cat to seek out this missing book and bring it home!

My big goal for the next two weeks is to get the surveys settled and out to people so I can figure out how many of each card I’ll need to order and leave the pre-order store open long enough that folks can order holiday cards. My overall next steps are:

  • July: Talk to Backerkit about pre-order store for late backers
  • July: Send out surveys
  • Aug: Finalize art
  • Aug: Collect payment and lock addresses
  • Aug: Order cards based on final quantities
  • Sept: Ship cards to backers

If you missed the campaign and want to get notified when the surveys/pre-launch store opens, follow along for updates!

Timing changes

For StoryGuider, I had originally planned to launch during the summer and then pushed to the fall so I could run the campaign not during summer vacation (while I’m on kiddo duty at home and my weekly hours for TTRPGkids is 1/3 of what it is during the school year).

I’m bumping it another 10 days or so to give myself more time to build a pre-launch following and hopefully find a Backerkit collaboration partner. This will also give a little more time to meet some of the pre-funding goals on ko-fi and itchio and be solidly into the school year (so I have more time each day to track the project).

I want to make sure the project has a good launch so, while I don’t like the push, I think it will be better in the longrun for ensuring it is successful and I can deliver a quality game to everyone.

Fulfillment changes

I’d planned to fulfill StoryGuider via print-on-demand (POD) codes from DriveThruRPG, but I’ve decided to switch to another POD printing and fulfillment source. Currently, Lulu is my favorite and has been recommended by a few folks, but I am still doing a bit of research and getting prototypes before committing. Functionally, it will be the same as getting a code through DTRPG, but it will run through a different source.

Art and prototyping kick offs

Thanks to pre-funding on itchio and ko-fi, I’ve already recieved art for two of the series! I’m planning on kicking off two more by the end of July if I can hit a few other goals and am starting the prototyping process. This will help me to fulfill StoryGuider much more quickly as I can do small stretches of work now, during the summer, while waiting for launch.

I also REALLY like being able to pay my artists, and the earlier I can do that, the better it is and the more it helps them. There’s two teen artists on the payroll, and if I can kick them off during the summer, I’m hoping that will help them to not be so stressed during the school year.

General timeline and pre-funding

My current general timeline for StoryGuider’s pre-launch is:

  • July: need to reach 100 pre-launch followers or push another 10 days
  • July: kick off teen artists based on pre-funding goals
  • July/Aug: pull ads on indie newsletters/websites
  • Aug: finish the digital doc for Will the Wizard
  • Aug: order prototype print for Will the Wizard
  • Aug: start launch party on Backerkit
  • Sept: launch day!

And with regards to pre-funding…

Both itchio and ko-fi are inching closer to hitting another goal, and once they hit, I can kick off more art!

Pre-funding is taking all my digital earnings for right now and putting it towards the project. This, so far, has reduced the total funding needed by about $2k + Backerkit fees associated with that $2k and makes it just a bit easier to hit the baseline goal (and work towards stretch goals) on launch.

You can find the itchio sale here and the ko-fi support page here.

I’ve already posted by GenCon schedule here, and I’m planning on releasing more info on Ban This Book Fest tomorrow (it’s about showcasing books that are or might be banned, not like… trying to ban a book).

As always, there is just… general chaos on the background, but hopefully this help give a good account of the broad strokes and helps to keep you updated on some of the work and choices going on with TTRPGkids. Thank you for following along, and… until next time, happy gaming!!
